Father Hubert J. Mertens was one of those pioneering priests who played a major role in the building of the parishes and missions of Western Washington.
In the fall of 1924 he saw that the Catholics of Midland and Summit needed his ministry. The first church was completed in 1930. It was a simple structure seating 175 persons and was destroyed by fire December 20, 1940.

Father Robert E. Logan became pastor in 1944 and set about building the
beautiful present church, which was completed in December of 1947. The
present Parish Hall was built in 1958.
In 1998, St. John of the Woods joined with St. Ann and Sacred Heart in a single Pastoral Region.
